Group 2 reach first campsite

Ist campsiteWe have arrived at our camp in the village of Chitti Tilahar after a wonderful day’s trekking past terraces of rice, millet and green vegetables.

It is now raining but the temporary inconvenience to us is nothing compared to the difficulties experienced by the villagers in relation to their school.  The main buildings are 40 years old.  One is in a state of collapse and another is so dark inside that students find it almost impossible to read.  Each classroom has a single bare bulb for lighting.  One building has been improved by painting the interior white and providing a new concrete floor.  Classrooms are equipped with only a blackboard.  There are no cupboards and there are too few desks for the number of students – up to 60 in a class.

the classrooms

The English teacher, Ram Sharan Sharma said:

“We don’t have enough English books and no reference books.  When I read a word in an English book that I don’t know I have to phone someone in Kathmandu.”

Earlier we had a humbling experience when the whole school of more than 800 students welcomed us with garlands and flower heads.  Some students performed dance and songs for us, while others posed for photographs and giggled at their own images on our digital screens.  Many were keen to talk to us in English and to ask where we were from.

Last week Heather Gray announced that Who cares? Scotland will provide funds for a new water source for the school.  This week Jeff announced that we will also fund new toilets.  That brought a cheer from the assembled children.

Nothing could have prepared us for what we saw today.  The gifts we brought were gratefully received but they were neither adequate to the needs nor to the welcome of our hosts.

We need a way to keep this connection and continue to provide support to the school from the Scottish residential child care community. This could be such a mutually beneficial relationship.

Hi everyone I hope the rain doesn’t last too long. I feel quite emotional again reading about your visit to the same school we visited on the first trek – I’m sure like us there wasn’t a dry eye throughout the welcome presentation they put on.. The future project of providing funds for the water source is really exciting. I can’t wait to hear more about your trip via the blog. Take care Kirsten x

You are so right. There is much to learn both ways and a sustained link would be great. The first aim is £6k. But the greater aim is better understanding.

Hi Janice (Gould) – hope the trek is going well and you’re not missing home comforts too much. Namastes, garlands and smiling children should more than compensate the cold water, latrines and blisters! Look forward to hearing all about it, take plenty of photos so we can share your experience. Judy. A good idea about establishing links to support the school. So much could be done. Graham-hope your legs are holding out! Scotland is looking for a new leader- I don’t mean Salmond. George Burley has been sacked.
