Hot off the mountain
Your blogger is now back in range and has sent the following report:
Team 2 met their challenge yesterday when everyone completed the tough climb up the ridge from Phurano Duwar to the camp site at Bhara Pokhari. We were rewarded with spectacular views of the Annapurna and Manaslu Himal.
The effects of altitude were noticeable last night. Some of the team were affected more than others but no-one got sick. We are all keeping our Lake Louise altitude sickness charts.
The day ended with a camp fire with star turns provided by Mahesh, Jeff and Niall, mostly unhindered by the backing vocals. Here is a photo of the first group at the campfire to give you an idea of the atmosphere.
Sadly, poorer weather higher up meant the optional further trek to 4100m was ruled out, though we still had to waken at 5am to hear the bad news. The good news was that we had another two hours in our sleeping bags.
We had a pleasant downhill trek today and are now camped in a forest clearing at Chitre Kharka. The tents are pitched on a steepish slope and some of us are wondering what we did to get the pitches farthest down the hill from the mess tent.
Tonight’s sunset was again spectacular, causing the mountains to change colour almost by the minute. It is cloudy so we won’t have clear views of the stars but looking into the valley to the south we can see little pin-pricks of light from villages and isolated farms.
Everyone sends greetings to supporters at home. Sam Taylor would like to send a message to daughter Zoe and son Lewis to say that she is doing fine but misses them.
